Last month I visited the city of Mumbai, the business and movie hub of India and stayed at the luxurious Taj Mahal Palace and ticked off one of the places-to-stay in my must-visit-hotel bucket list.
Since I first laid my eyes on Taj Mahal Palace as a kid, I always dreamt of staying there and feels great to have finally done it. And what a stay it was! It will be etched in my memory forever.
For the uninitiated, let me tell you why Taj Mahal Palace is so special. Built in 1903, it is India’s first luxury hotel. The flagship hotel of Taj Hotels, Resorts and Palaces overlooks the majestic Gateway of India, one of most important landmarks of the Mumbai city.
India’s first harbor landmark, the iconic Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai is strategically located in prime historical and commercial hub of the city.
The city’s financial center, parliament, stadium, museums, art galleries, entertainment and shopping districts are all located close by. Colaba Causeway, one of the most popular tourist destination is walking distance from Taj.
There are two buildings that make up the hotel, The Taj Mahal Palace built in 1903 and the Taj Mahal Tower built in 1973. The Palace wing in the Taj Mahal Palace is where we stayed.
The hotel has hosted many notable guests, from presidents to prime ministers, to business magnates to royalty and to movie and show business stars from all around the world.
From the time of check-in to check-out, everything went off smoothly and we experienced the legendary Taj hospitality. We were given a traditional welcome and escorted to our suite in the Palace Wing of the hotel.
The lobby of the hotel is as regal and grand as a palace. It is a perfect blend of luxury and tradition. The reception is located there.
We stayed in the Luxury Grande Room with a city view. Our room had a timeless elegance. It was a spacious room with king-sized bed and all top notch facilities. In-room facilities included 40-inch flat screen TV with numerous channels, 24 hours room service, laundry service, complimentary newspaper, high speed Internet, fully stocked bar, complimentary coffee and tea making facilities, butler service and in-room safe.
The spacious Italian marble bathroom featured a huge bathtub, separate shower area, wash basin and a toilet area. It had premium quality toiletries.
The hotel houses some of the best and award-winning restaurants in the city like Golden Dragon, Wasabi by Morimoto, Masala Kraft, Souk, La Patisserie, Aquarius the poolside restaurant and Shamiana their all-day-dining restaurant. Sea Lounge is renowned for its signature Afternoon Tea. We had our breakfast at Sea Lounge.
Harbour Bar is Mumbai’s first licensed bar and it is a great place to enjoy a drink or two. Palace Lounge offers complimentary 24 hours tea and coffee for the in-house guests.
Apart from the restaurants and bar, Taj Mahal Palace has swimming pool, gym, spa, beauty salon, ballrooms, meeting rooms and luxury stores.
The hotel also conducts Heritage Walk every day and they will take you on a historic walk through the hotel where every pillar tells a story. This signature experience is a must-try if you have the time.
We loved our stay in the Taj and it was one of the most incredible stay we had in a long time. Everything about our stay was excellent. Special thanks to the staff for their warm hospitality. We are not going to forget our stay at Taj Mahal Palace in a hurry.
