Around the last week of May, we were invited to an Iftar at Wakame, a fine dining restaurant that offers modern Asian cuisine. I’ve always wanted to visit Wakame, but I had an impression that it was mostly a seafood restaurant with hardly any options for vegetarians. But I was totally wrong.
My partner and I were offered a completely vegetarian Iftar set menu. We were really impressed with the variety offered to us vegetarians. Loved the fact that they have a separate menu for vegetarians.
Located on Level 3 of the uber cool Sofitel Downtown Dubai, the restaurant transports you to Far East Asia. The setting of the place is sleek and stylish. The venue is spacious with light-wood furniture and dim lighting. It has a separate bar area.
This is what you can expect at Wakame, according to their website:
Anchored around the sushi and dim sum counters that immediately catch the eye upon entering, imaginations will wander towards the Far East watching our chefs work with the freshest authentic produce, culminating in a range of signature dishes using traditional techniques and ingredients reflecting the best of Asia. Dining at Wakame will evoke all five senses, introducing an exciting combination of textures and flavors, from small sharing plates to large plates and exquisite desserts.
As it was a media Iftar, we were seated in a communal dining table. Along with the Iftar set menu, our table had Iftar essentials like Dates, Water and Drinks. Our berry based Mocktail was refreshing.
I am one of those people who don’t like buffets due to food wastage and various other reasons. So loved the set menu concept where we enjoyed a relaxed Iftar, and everything was served to our table.
Wakame’s Iftar is priced at AED 170 per person. The Iftar menu features some of their most popular dishes from their regular menu. As my partner and I are vegetarians, we were served dishes from their veg set menu.
Our food experience at Wakame:
Mix Wakame Salad was one of the first dishes to arrive. It was a light and fresh salad with artichokes, red bell peppers and green beans with mixed Asian greens.
Exotic Mushrooms had a mix of different kinds of sautéed mushrooms with crispy taro root and black truffle miso. It was perfect for a mushroom lover like me.
Completely vegetarian Veg Maki Roll was good. It was vegan friendly too.
Wakame Flame Maki is one of their specialty Maki, we had the Tempura Vegetable one. Our platter of flaming Maki had assorted veg Tempura, pineapple salsa, wasabi and butternut squash. This was the only dish, we didn’t like as we found it too chewy and lacking in taste and flavor.
We loved the delectable Vegetable Taco. The taco shell was stuffed with assorted veggies, avocado cream, jalapeño and mango salsa.
Another standout dish was the very addictive Crispy Rice Avocado. The crispy rice was topped with creamy avocado and spicy jalapeño.
For main course, we were served Crispy Tofu & assorted mushrooms, Vegetable Pad Thai and Coconut Rice. We liked all our main course dishes, but our favorite was the Crispy tofu & mushrooms in Singaporean red chili sauce. It was spicy and oh-so-delicious.
To sweeten our palate, we were served Fig & Date Sticky Toffee Pudding with butterscotch sauce, vanilla ice cream, pistachio crumble and pecan nut. It was warm, rich and moist.
As it was an Iftar, we were also offered Arabian inspired Baklava and freshly sliced Seasonal Fruits.
We ended our fabulous evening with an aromatic cup of Jasmine Tea.
Our dining experience at Wakame was amazing. We loved the food, the service and the atmosphere and can’t wait to come back again.
