An Unforgettable Journey Onboard the Belmond British Pullman Train

I have always dreamt of a luxurious train travel in a vintage train and finally last autumn my dream came true. When we visited London last year we went on a day trip in the Belmond British Pullman train from London to Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

It was an unforgettable journey onboard the British Pullman, a luxury heritage restored 1920s train that has sheltered royalty and been a star of the silver screen. Each whimsically-named carriage has a story to tell and ours was the elegant Vera.

The one day journey started from London Victoria Station to Chesterfield and back with breakfast, lunch and dinner. After taking our seat in the exquisitely designed carriage, the smartly dressed stewards served a sparkling Bellini and a delectable brunch.

We enjoyed the brunch while feasting our eyes on the ever-changing vistas through the window. Upon arrival at Chesterfield, we were transferred to a private coach to Chatsworth.

About Chatsworth

Set in the heart of Derbyshire’s Peak District, Chatsworth is one of England’s most celebrated country estates and has been home to the Cavendish family, the Dukes of Devonshire, for over 450 years.

The house is renowned for its exquisite art collection, grand architecture and meticulously maintained gardens designed by Joseph Paxton. We explored the opulent State Rooms, admired masterpieces spanning 4,000 years and wandered through formal gardens, woodland and water features. Chatsworth had it all- beauty, history and elegance.

After a day filled with exploration, we made it back to the coach by early evening and traveled back to Chesterfield station to rejoin British Pullman train. We were welcomed back with a glass of Champagne and served a seasonal five-course dinner accompanied by a bottle of wine. Before we reached our final destination we were served a cup of coffee.

It was an utterly engaging journey, from the lovingly restored interiors of the art deco train to the magnificent spaces of Chatsworth House. Some journeys stay with you long after they end, this was one of them!

Some details about this experience:

Booking in advance is recommend, we booked online and chose the experience we wanted to do.

Always arrive 30 minutes before departure and your e-ticket will have details of the seating arrangements. Late arrivals are not accommodated.

Smart attire and even formal dress is encouraged, try and avoid casual clothing including denim, trainers, baseball caps, collarless t-shirts and shorts.

Special dietary requests can only be catered for if advised in advance. We asked for the vegetarian option couple of weeks before our trip.

There is a strict no smoking policy on the train.

Doors onboard are opened and secured by train staff. On arrival at your destination, your steward will advise you which door to use to leave the train. Please do not open any doors when the train stops.
