Cotswolds and Oxford in 24 Hours

London is one of my favorite cities in the world and I’ve visited it many times. This year when I was in London I took a day trip to the University city of Oxford and the beautiful countryside of the Cotswold. These two trips are the most popular day trips from London.

I booked the tour through Viator, it was a small group tour with 15 people and perfect introduction to first-time visitors. The pickup was from a centrally located meeting point. The tour started early in the morning around 7am and lasted for 10 hours.

Our first stop was at Burford, gateway to Cotswolds. It is one of the most picturesque towns in Oxfordshire, famous for its steep high street which sweeps downhill towards the River Windrush.

Burford is filled with Georgian townhouses, a Medieval church, shops, tea houses and historic pubs. We had an English breakfast at one of the cosy cafes in Burford.

Second stop was the quaint and scenic village of Bibury in Cotswolds. A series of two gorgeous hamlets that are split by the River Coln, on one side of the stream is Bibury and on the other side is Arlington, Rack Isle and Awkward Hill.

Bibury is a perfect traditional English village, it’s like stepping back in time to a bygone era and looks as pretty as a postcard.

Next and our final stop was at the University city of Oxford where we spent half a day exploring the city and its various attractions. We had lunch at Turf Tavern the oldest pub in Oxford.

Oxford might not be the biggest city, but when it comes to things to see and do, it really knows how to pack it in. It is a stunning city whose culture and history revolves around the renowned university of the same name.

I spent the time exploring its medieval city center, college landmarks, museums and art galleries. Started off at the Ashmolean Museum, best described as ‘the British museum in miniature’. Free entry and packed with fine art, ancient antiquities, porcelain, glassware, marbles and a host of Roman treasures.

Some of the must-visit places to visit in Oxford:

1. Martyrs Memorial

2. Broad Street

3. Sheldonian Theatre

4. Clarendon Building of the Bodleian Library

5. Bridge of Sighs

6. Bodleian Library

7. Radcliffe Camera

8. All Soul’s College

9. St. Mary’s University Church

10. The Bear Inn

11. Christ Church College

12. Covered Market

13. Saxon Tower

14. Pitt-Rivers Museum of Natural History

15. Oxford Castle & Prison

16. Folly Bridge & the River Thames

17. Eagle & Child Pub

It was a great day trip and we got to squeeze in as much as possible within the day. I wish there was more time to explore Oxford properly or go on a river cruise.
