Couple of days back I visited WAFI for an event and during lunch break I couldn’t decide where to go as they have many good restaurants. Finally decided on Khan Murjan Restaurant situated in the heart of the exotic Khan Murjan Souk inside the mall.
Khan Murjan Souk is a spectacular and authentic Arabian souk that has a settings of a 14th century souk. Khan Murjan Souk has shops and vendors from different parts of the Arab world and I felt like I was transported to a different era.
Centrally located in the Khan Murjan Souk is the Khan Murjan Restaurant that offers authentic taste of Arabia. You can expect Arabic food made from the freshest ingredients, using traditional cooking techniques.
Their menu features dishes from various Arab countries. They’ve an a-la-carte menu as well as a deli-like food display. You can either choose from their menu or the food display. I ordered from their menu.
The restaurant has a marble courtyard and the Umawi architecture provides an ornate backdrop. The venue is airy, bright and vibrant. The soothing sounds of running water from a traditional water wheel provides a relaxing atmosphere.
In a separate smoking section, Khan Murjan Restaurant offers Shisha. As a non smoker, I sat in the non smoking section. I was delighted when I got to know that they serve fresh Sugarcane Juice. Yes, of course I ordered the juice and loved it.
Being a vegetarian, I couldn’t try many of their meat based dishes. But they have good veggie options. I was offered complimentary Mixed Pickles and Arabic Bread.
I ordered a mix of cold and hot mezze like their delicious Hummus Beiruti, nutritious Hindbeh, smoky flavored Grilled Halloumi and vibrantly green Egyptian Falafel with dip. Warm and toasty Egyptian Pita Bread or Aish Baladi was a joy to dip into the hummus.
For main course I had the Egyptian Speciality Koshari which has rice with lentils, pasta, chickpeas, garlic, fried onion, tomato and spicy sauce. It is a perfect comfort food and one of my favorite Egyptian dishes.
Dessert was the decadent Arabic Ice Cream/Ashta made with clotted cream and covered with pistachios.
Ended my lunch with a pot of fragrant Moroccan Tea. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect afternoon than this.
The food, the drinks, the atmosphere and the hospitality at Khan Murjan Restaurant is fabulous. It is one of the best Arabic restaurants in the city. A restaurant worth taking your overseas guests when they visit Dubai for a complete Arabian experience.
