I got to know about the novel Crazy Rich Asians and the author Kevin Kwan last month when I attended the Emirates Literature Festival in Dubai, as he was one of the speakers. I was intrigued by the title and decided to buy the book.
This 2013 international bestseller was followed by the sequel China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems. The author says that the novel is loosely based on his own childhood in Singapore.
The novel is built on the lives of uber-rich people of Singapore, Hong Kong and China. This satirical novel is easy to read. It sounds superficial, but nevertheless kept me entertained. Crazy Rich Asians gives an insight into the lives of filthy rich and their opulence. There is not a single dull moment in this hilarious novel.
Below is the excerpt from the novel:
When New Yorker Rachael Chu agrees on a summer in Singapore to visit her boyfriend’s traditional Chinese family, she expects the trip to be relaxing, if a little dull. She has no idea….
Nick’s childhood home is a palace. He grew up riding in more private planes than cars. He and Rachael will be attending the wedding of the year. Oh, and Nick just happens to be one of Asia’s most eligible bachelors- and his formidable mother isn’t so sure Rachael is the right one for him.
It was refreshing to read about the crazy rich lives of Chinese families rather than the usual European and American families. There is romance, there is drama, gossip and whole lot of entertainment. It’s impossible not to get sucked into their juicy lives.
Crazy Rich Asians is good for one-time -read, its outrageously over the top if you ask me. Though it is a no brainer, it kept me glued from the first page till the last. Yes, definitely reading the next two novels in the series.
Some of my favorite quotes from the novel:
“There is nothing in the world that good food cannot fix.”
“Perfection comes at a sacrifice.”
“Remember, every treasure comes with a price.”
“This place is very real. You are the dream.”
“But I was never raised to believe that marriage was supposed to be my life’s goal.”
“Funny how you could be so intimate with someone for so many years, and yet feel so painfully awkward around them now.”
“We were buying things we actually loved, not things to show off.”
You love your children so much, you do everything to try to protect them, and they don’t even appreciate it.”
“Aiyooooh, finish everything on your plate, girls! Don’t you know there are children starving in America.”
