The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

Book review of the Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

I’ve always wanted to read Kristin Hannah‘s novels, but somehow I never got around to it. On my recent trip to India, I finally ordered her books through Flipkart.

Kristin Hannah is a bestselling American writer with many awards. The Nightingale comes under historical fiction genre and it was published in 2015. Some of the characters are inspired by real people during World War II.

Here’s an excerpt from the book:

Despite their differences, vianne and Isabelle have always been close. Younger, bolder Isabelle lives in Paris, while Vianne is content with life in the French countryside with her husband Antoine and their child. But when the Second World War breaks out and Antoine is conscripted to fight, Isabelle is sent to the country by her father to help Vianne.

The Nightingale, is a tribute to the exceptional courage of Frenchwomen during World War II. The story follows two sisters, Vianne and Isabelle during the World War II and the hardships they endure, during that difficult period.

This beautifully written book portrays bravery, courage, fear, love, sacrifice and loss in the time of war. The Nightingale had a profound impact on me. This unforgettable book is a must-read, it is packed with action and emotion.

I had tears running down my cheeks while reading this book. A box of Kleenex is highly recommended when you read this book, especially towards the end.

Some of my favorite quotes from The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah are:

“In love we find out who we want to be. In war we find out who we are.”

“She was tired of being strong.”

“I belong to a generation that didn’t expect to be protected from every danger. We knew the risks and took them anyway.”

“She wanted to bottle how safe she felt in this moment, so she could drink of it later when loneliness and fear left her parched.”

“She has a steel exterior, but it protects a candy floss heart.”

“But love has to be stronger than hate, or there is no future for us.”

“I know now what matters, and it is not what I have lost. It is my memories. Wounds heal. Love lasts. We remain.”

“I’m not sure anyone knows what they’re looking for until they find it.”
